For many adults near Boston, recovery from alcohol does not require leaving work or home. Our Needham center delivers evidence-based alcohol treatment on an outpatient schedule: Evening Treatment on Monday through Thursday evenings, 6 to 9 pm, for people who work during the day, and Day Treatment for people who need more structure early on, including those stepping down from detox. Counseling with master's-level clinicians is paired with medication when it helps. Naltrexone (including the monthly Vivitrol injection), acamprosate and disulfiram are the FDA-approved options, and our medical team decides with you whether one fits. We do not run detox on site. Heavy daily drinking or a history of withdrawal seizures means medical detox comes first, and we arrange it with a partner facility, then plan your start with us. Research links the best outcomes to staying engaged for at least 90 days, which is why every plan ends in aftercare rather than at the door. Clear Steps Recovery offers a substance abuse day treatment program that your insurance company may refer to as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This level of care is generally preferred by clients who need a higher level of support but do not require an inpatient program.
For clients who have completed Day Treatment, or who do not need as much structure at their stage of recovery, Clear Steps offers Evening Treatment on Monday through Thursday evenings, 6 to 9 pm. Your insurance carrier may authorize it under its own program name. Admissions confirms the exact benefit before you start.

Coming from a Section 35, an ER or detox
Many people come to our Needham center after a first stop somewhere else. Clear Steps Recovery is an independent outpatient program, not part of any hospital or court program, and each route below starts with a referral or a call to (603) 769-8981.
After a Section 35 commitment ends: A Section 35 commitment is inpatient treatment in a facility the state licenses or approves, for up to 90 days and usually much less. When it ends, the law says the person is to be encouraged to continue treatment, the Department of Public Health makes case management available for up to a year, and the facility makes aftercare recommendations and referrals, but the court has no say in whether the person takes part (M.G.L. c.123, section 35, mass.gov). The facility can talk with family about the discharge only if the person signs a release. If the aftercare plan includes outpatient care, call us before the discharge date and we will set up an assessment for Day Treatment or Evening Treatment in Needham. Clear Steps Recovery does not file petitions and has no Section 35 or overnight beds. Our Section 35 guide for families covers the whole process.
After an ER visit or a hospital stay: If you were treated in an emergency room for an overdose, withdrawal or a crisis tied to drinking or drug use, ask for your discharge papers and any referral the care team recommends, then call (603) 769-8981. Admissions verifies your insurance and books an assessment, the same day in many cases. If the hospital team or our assessment says medical detox has to come first, we arrange it with a partner facility, and our detox referral page explains that handoff.
After detox or a residential stay: Call while you are still there. Admissions can plan your first day in Day Treatment or Evening Treatment on Monday through Thursday evenings for the day you are discharged, so the start date is set before you leave and there is no gap in care.
